Programming for Schools and Community Groups

Classroom Exhibit Presentations

The SDCHM is excited to offer educator-led programs for school groups from grades K-12, as well as college and community groups.  Our Classroom Exhibit Presentations (CEP's) engage learners through presentations, guided discussions, and interactive activities.  We offer CEP's on five different topics, including:

  • The Rise and Fall of the First Chinese Emperor
  • Pre-20th Century Chinese contributions to science and technology
  • The art of Chinese Calligraphy
  • Traditions of the Chinese Lunar New Year
  • Early San Diego Chinese American History

For more information about CEP's, please review our brochure.  Each CEP topic can be tailored for delivery to a range of age groups (from elementary school to retirement age).

If you are a teacher or group leader and would like to request program delivery, please fill out our online form.

Virtual Programs FAQ:

  • Virtual school programs are available Mondays through Fridays at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m.
  • Programs are 60 minutes long, are offered live online, and take place using Zoom. We will do our best to accommodate requests for programs using other digital platforms.
  • Programs are designed for one class at a time, allowing museum educators to tailor the program according to your students’ needs. Each virtual program is limited to 30 participants per session.
  • All programs require at least 1 teacher or chaperone present online for the duration of the program.
  • Reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance.
  • Thanks to support from the California Arts Council, we are able to provide virtual CEPs to all classrooms free of charge

On-site field trip FAQ:

  • At our facilities in downtown San Diego, we offer tours of our current exhibitions on-display, as well as tours of the Asian Pacific Historic District for school groups.  We likewise offer different hands-on activities, like our "Dig to Discover" archaeology box activity.
  • All field trips require at least 1 teacher or chaperone per 10 students present at the museum.
  • Reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance.  We can receive field trips at the museum Wednesdays-Fridays or on weekends (when open to the general public)
  • For museum tours, all students under 12 years of age, along with their adult chaperone will be admitted free of charge.  For hands-on programs, like our calligraphy workshops, we will need to charge a $5 per student materials fee.
